Sleep better

Exercise and Sleep: Does Timing Matter?

Regular physical activity is one of the most reliable ways to improve sleep quality. Contrary to old advice, evening exercise is usually fine, with the exception of very intense workouts right before bed.

Exercise helps sleep

People who are physically active tend to fall asleep more easily, spend more time in deep sleep and report better sleep quality. Exercise can also reduce anxiety and depressive symptoms that interfere with sleep, and helps with weight management, which matters for sleep apnea. Benefits build over weeks of regular activity, so do not judge it on a single night.

Is evening exercise a problem?

A 2019 systematic review and meta-analysis in Sports Medicine looked at studies of evening exercise in healthy adults. Overall, exercise in the evening did not impair sleep and was associated with slightly more deep sleep. The exception was vigorous exercise ending within about an hour of bedtime, which was linked to taking longer to fall asleep and slightly less sleep.

So a moderate jog, gym session or class in the evening is generally fine. If you notice you feel wired afterwards, move it earlier or tone down intensity.

How much activity

US physical activity guidelines recommend at least 150 minutes a week of moderate activity (such as brisk walking) plus muscle-strengthening activities on 2 or more days. Any amount is better than none, and walking counts.

Timing ideas

  • Morning exercise outdoors combines activity with morning light, which helps anchor your body clock.
  • Afternoon and early evening is when many people feel strongest, and it does not appear to harm sleep.
  • Late evening: choose gentler options like walking, yoga or stretching within the last hour before bed.
  • Night shift workers: try to exercise before your shift rather than right before your daytime sleep.

When exercise is hard because you are exhausted

Poor sleep makes exercise feel harder, and lack of exercise makes sleep worse. Start small: a 10 minute walk after a meal, taking the stairs, or a short stretching routine. If fatigue is severe or new, or you have chest pain, breathlessness or dizziness with activity, talk to a doctor before increasing exercise.

Frequently asked questions

Will a workout at 8pm keep me awake?

For most people, no. Research suggests evening exercise does not harm sleep unless it is vigorous and ends within about an hour of bedtime.

What type of exercise is best for sleep?

Both aerobic exercise and resistance training have been linked to better sleep. The best one is the one you will do regularly.

Can exercise help insomnia?

It can improve sleep quality and is a helpful addition, but chronic insomnia usually needs CBT-I as the main treatment.
